The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children visit the dentist for the first time when their teeth begin to emerge, or by their first birthday. When it comes time for your child to visit Payson Premier Dental, our pediatric dentist and team will take special care to ensure that your child’s visit is comfortable and enjoyable, and that he or she feels safe. We want to help children develop positive associations with the dental office and avoid the development of dental anxiety or fear.
During your child’s first appointment, Dr. Isabel Simpson will discuss your child’s oral health with you, as well as any steps that you should take as a parent to help your child remain healthy. This may include information and instructions about:
- The proper use of fluoride
- Oral habits to be aware of (such as thumb, finger, and pacifier sucking)
- Developmental milestones (such as teething)
- How to prevent accidents that cause trauma to the teeth, mouth, and face
- Soft tissues (such as cheeks and gums)
- How nutrition affects oral health
- Proper oral hygiene
We will also gently examine your child’s mouth, and if your child is a toddler, we may provide a cleaning as well.
Your child’s first appointment can be stressful for both you and your child. You can help your child feel more comfortable and greatly reduce the stress of the appointment by continually providing positive messages about dental visits. Please feel free to call our office at 928-472-8400 if you have questions or concerns. Our team will be happy to give you some tips on how to help your child prepare and avoid feeling afraid or anxious.
